Disc Golf Italia

Until date, Italy was well know for Ultimate and Freestyle, especially with the events in Rimini, with thousands of players competing every year at the Paganello Beach Ultimate and Freestyle Tournament. Even many areas in Italy would be perfect to host Disc Golf events or offering great spaces for installing permanent courses, not much action could be done in view of Disc Golf. There is actually one 12-holes disc golf course in Italy (Talamone), which belongs to a camping ground, of which is almost unknown.

A new initiative started in the region of Tuscany by Renita Cameron and Pablo Maggio, respectively President and Vice President of “Disc Golf Italia” Associazione Sportiva, in March of 2009. Renita is an American who has lived in Tuscany for more than 17 years. She is an independent Marketing, Advertising and Travel Consulting Professional. She is also creator and founder of "Made in. . . (Pistoia)" a cultural association, which promotes the knowledge and understanding of the works and techniques of contemporary artists and craftsmen who exemplify the illustrious Italian artistic tradition. Pablo, an avid Frisbee lover, has found Disc Golf to be his sport of choice and aims to become one of Italy’s most prominent players. He is also a very active in introducing Disc Golf to the youth of Italy and petitioning for this sport to be included in the 2016 Olympic games.

Renita and Pablo were looking for new and challenging activities in the field of leisure and sport, which could be attractive for the schools and children, but also interesting for tourism and international events. Having studied the sport for nearly 3 years, they convinced their partners to invest into some practice baskets. With the support of PDGA-Europe and Paul Francz from Switzerland, Disc Golf Italia was finally founded by the middle of May.

The first presentations were done with an introduction of Disc Golf at a sports event for the National Olympic Association (C.O.N.I.), as well as various other demonstrations held at regional conferences. Other presentations to introduce Disc Golf in Italy, including national and local tournaments, will follow during the summer and fall.

The Italia Open, an international tournament, in the future shall be held in Italy every year in the month of November.
